"It's okay" is the perfect description. There wasn't anything spectacular about the place. The atmosphere was kind of awkward (bright lights, gaudy decoration) and the food wasn't back, but wasn't mind blowing.
I lived in New Orleans. I have eaten at all the famous shops: Johnny's, Mothers, Leidenheimers, etc. While this is not the best Po' Boy I have ever had, it is THE ONLY PLACE OUTSIDE OF NEW ORLEANS that I have ever tried that even understands the concept of what a Po' Boy is. My wife and I went to Wild Shrimp last week. The food was very good, but the Po' Boy sandwich simply is NOT a Po' Boy. It was so over spiced that you could not taste anything but the sauce. If you have never had a real authentic Po' Boy, this is, in my opinion, the only option in St. Pete. Real NOLA food is simple, and fairly plain. The Po' Boy sandwich is all about the bread (every Po' Boy shop in New Orleans uses Leidenheimer french bread, nothing else) and Ricky P's is the only place in ten years that I've found that has gotten the bread correct. MY ONLY COMPLAINT: The shrimp on my wife's sandwich weren't great. They seemed a little over cooked, perhaps reheated? Instead, try the Roast beef and gravy with ham and swiss cheese. It's the special at Mother's in NOLA and Ricky P's does it admirably. If you don't like this, you just don't like Po' Boys. A roast beef debris Po' Boy is the ORIGINAL sandwich that started it all a hundred years ago- and you can't go wrong.
The food is always consistent and fresh! Nice staff. Only a few seats but you can't go wrong with this restaurant!
